Located in Western Rwanda, Gitesi is a washing station owned and run by father and son team, Alexis and Aime Gahizi. Sustainability didn’t come easy for them after they opened in 2005, but by 2010 they were able to make a small profit and have since been increasing the quality of their coffee year-on-year. This commitment to improvement has, for example, come about through bonus payment schemes for farmers: farmers are paid a premium for only picking and delivering ripe cherry to the station during the season from March to August. Farmers are also given cows to provide an alternative income stream during the low season which in turn provides organic fertiliser for the farms. Farmers also receive private health insurance and altogether, these factors create a virtuous circle that results in beautiful complex coffees. This coffee is CAFE Practices and Rainforest Alliance certified.

PLEASE NOTE: We roast and flush all of our coffees in nitrogen as whole bean giving 3 months of just roasted freshness. All of our coffees, with the exception of those on our subscription plan, are sealed as wholebean. However, if you are buying from our online shop and would like your coffee ground, please leave a message in the notes at check-out saying you'd like it ground and your brew method and we'll open the can and grind prior to sending. Please be aware that this will only give 3 weeks of freshness rather than our normal 3 months.
