Uraga is both the name of the washing station and the wider area in Guji that this coffee is from. It’s our second year in a row of this coffee and it’s just as fruit-driven and clean this year as it was last year. Our friend and coffee producer Israel Degfa, has the knack of coffee processing down to a fine art, and across all 34 of his washing stations, so it’s our pleasure to have another great coffee from him.

Getting coffees down from some of the smallholders farmers that supply Uraga is a significant challenge. They supply improved varietals such as Certo and Wolisho as well as older native forest varieties transferred to family smallholder plots. After meticulous processing, Israel’s team select and grade the cherries into categories 1 and 2 with us only buying the high grade and high scoring 1’s.

We love supporting Israel because of his expertise and the quality of what he produces, but also because in coming from a coffee growing region, he grew up amongst coffee farmers and they’re his friends as well as business partners, and he looks after them and conscientiously reinvests back into the communities.
