In the heart of Kenya’s famed coffee country lies Rukira Wet Mill, a cornerstone of the Othaya Farmers’ Cooperative Society Limited—one of the most respected cooperatives in East Africa. This esteemed group unites a collection of exceptional washing stations, locally known as “factories,” that share a common vision: to craft some of the world’s most distinctive coffees.

Rukira’s story begins high in the fertile hills of Nyeri, the traditional homeland of the Kikuyu people. Here, volcanic soils, abundant rainfall, and elevations reaching up to 1,860 meters above sea level create the ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Each season, 545 dedicated smallholder farmers bring their carefully handpicked cherries to Rukira, where they are meticulously processed to preserve their inherent complexity and brightness.

These farmers cultivate traditional Kenyan varietals renowned for their vibrant acidity, juicy sweetness, and remarkable depth of flavor. Every step, from selective hand-harvesting to the precise wet milling process, reflects a commitment to quality and sustainability—a heritage passed down through generations and a commitment reflected by us at Root & Branch.

The result is a coffee that tells the story of its land and its people: coffee with acidity, full body and ripe fruit flavours - lively, elegant, and unforgettable in the cup.
